Travelling in pregnancy is not as straightforward as it sounds. There are so many things to consider, (check out this blog post for more info!) but it’s also a perfect time to soak up some alone time with your partner before everything changes.
I asked my followers on Instagram about where best to pick, and they had so many brilliant suggestions! The most popular destinations were Santorini and Croatia!
Our main requirements were:
- Short-haul flight
- Suitable for a short trip (we were not bringing our 19 month old so would only have a few days)
- Romantic with good food
- Somewhere we hadn’t been before, and would be unlikely to return with 2 kids in a double buggy!
Having just got back from the most beautiful trip, I thought the best way to return the favour would be to share all the suggestions we received here in case anyone wishes to do a similar babymoon!
Santorini as a destination
Santorini was the absolutely perfect place to pick for a Babymoon destination! Being 28 weeks pregnant, I was treated like a queen by everyone I met! Everyone that saw I was pregnant checked if I was ok! They offered me their seat or made sure I didn’t have to wait in any queues, even for the restaurants! (We travelled in mid-August, which is peak season and I was treated like royalty despite this!)
Of course, there are lots of steps in the main cities, Fira and Oia, so you do need to feel relatively well to be able to handle the walking around. It may be best avoided if you have mobility issues.
For sun, sea and beautiful sunsets you just can’t imagine anywhere better!
Things to do:
- Although it isn’t best known for the beaches, Santorini does have some great beach clubs!
- Try the walk to Imburglia/ Fira
- Lost city Museum
- Boat trip – we spent a fantastic day on a trip of the island on a catamaran – we booked online whilst already there, with the Santorini Yachting Club
Our Itinerary:
Monday
- Late arrival to our hotel Aperanto suites, just outside Oia, at 4pm
- Dinner in Oia – Ambrosia restaurant
Tuesday
- Jo jo beach bar – Brilliant, lively beach with a DJ from around 3pm. Be aware you do need to pay for beds and umbrellas, and these are pricey compared to other places!
- Dinner in Fira – Rastoni restaurant. Ask for a table at the top terrace!
Wednesday
- Boat trip – definitely the highlight of our trip! We booked the night before by popping into a shop in Oia. However, prices are broadly similar (and fixed!) so you need to decide how much you want to spend and you can book online.
- We chose a boat that took up to 16 people and it was fab!
- Dinner in Oia – Melitini restaurant – more relaxed, low key, tapas restaurant.
Thursday
- Theros beach bar – gorgeous, secluded beach bar with a fantastic restaurant for lunch!
- Dinner in Fira – Argo restaurant
Other restaurants we were recommended but didn’t get a chance to try:
- Lotza
- Sunset taverna Oia
- Kapari wine restaurant (£££)
- Dimitris Amoudi
- To Psaraki
- Metaxi Mas
- Moji – Japanese fira
- Parra tavern
- Kapari
- West east suites dinner
- Karma in Oia.
- Advised to sit outside in the gorgeous courtyard garden. Lovely for dinner- really atmospheric.
- It doesn’t look over the water but actually makes a nice change for that reason.
- Mezzo
- Athenian House in Imerovigli.
- Avocado restaurant
- Yalos beach
- Infinity restaurant
- The Good Heart
- Theofanis
- Asteria
I hope this guide was useful – we absolutely loved our trip and only ate wonderful fresh food throughout! It was the perfect short trip away!
